What’s worth seeing in Vathy?

A tiny, picturesque town on the Greek island Samos has been attracting tourists with its beauty for many years. Already in the 16th century it had one of the most important Greek ports operating.

Despite many damages, that were done by an earthquake in 1953, the town still has its charm. Only a few buildings survived the cataclysm in intact state, but rest of them were rebuilt by locals to resemble the old houses. Since 1978 there is in force a law, according to which new buildings can be built only in strictly defined, traditional style with usage of specific colours. Thanks to that, walking by the town, we can feel like time stands still.

The most interesting monuments in Vathy are houses of rich families – Karavias and Drakoulis and temples. Take a look at the church of Saint Gregory or the cathedral with amazing wooden iconostasis. In a local Archaeological Museum you can see the most amazing troves, that survived on that island since the ancient times. The oldest objects are dated back to the 6th century B.C. The biggest pride of the museum is a 5.5 metres-high kouros, the monument of a man brought from the temple of Hera near Pythagoreio.

The local beach has around 1 kilometre of length. Not much, but everyone should find a place for themselves. Nearly on the whole length it has gentle, long descent to water, thanks to this, it is very popular among families with kids.

If you are hungry, make sure to step to one of local eateries. Almost in every, the basis of menu are fishes. Meat is also available, but freshly caught sardines or sprats are base for showcase dishes of local cuisine. In a tavern Artemis at Kefalopoulou 4 make sure to order “pandremenos sardeles”. “Pandremenos” means in Greek „marriage”. What do you get on a plate? Sardines are served in pairs. And they taste deliciously.
