In Elazığ there is situated known in the whole Turkey University of Fırat, that is the main scientific center in the eastern part of the country.

These lands used to be called by Armenians, a Golden Plain, as they have many sources of this valuable ore. The city is also famous for export of dried fruits and growing opium.

Elazığ is a city located in the region of Eastern Anatolia, whose beginnings go back to the 19th century when an Ottoman military base was set up there. With time, a new city, which was named Marmuret-ul-Aziz, attracts more and more residents. When in 1895 a nearby Harput was raided and plundered by Curds, Elazığ has become the center of the province. Nowadays it surrounded by fertile soils city that is developing rapidly. What does it offer for tourists?
The important point worth visiting in that region is a town Harput, located around 5 km further from the center. It lies on the trading route and used to a meeting spot for people of many cultures and religions. Nowadays, residues after the greater times are spread around the town ancient mosques, tombs, churches and a castle. In Elazığ especially interestingly present itself the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography, a minaret of a mosque Ulu Camii from the 12th century, Seljuk mosques from the 5th century A.C. and an ancient citadel. It is also worth to see an impressive tame and water plant on a river Euphrates, which is Keban Dan and Karakaya.
The cuisine of Elazığ is considered as one of the most diversified in Turkey. Fertile soils and well-developed agriculture provide the whole plethora of the best quality products – from meats, through different kinds of cheese, dried fruits, yogurts to honey. Restaurants served famous plates with meat. Characteristic dishes of that region are meatballs Harput köfte form mix of minced meat, wheat, herbs and spices cooked in tomato sauce. From the menu it is worth to choose also kelecoş, fried meat with onion served on a flat piece of bread softened in yogurt. A popular snack is nuts – orcik şekeri, caramelized bits of nuts.
