Since the ancient times, Trapani has been known for salt production. In the 19th century it was even exported to Norway. White mountains of salt and still, shallow water with birds wading in it are characteristics images of the seashore.
Around 50 kilometres east of Trapani there is situated an ancient town Segesta, destroyed by Carthaginians. To this day there are preserved a never-finished sanctuary in the mountains and a theatre.
StraGusto, a feast of street food, is taking place at the end of July on the square Mercato del Pesce. You can try titbits not only from Trapani, but also from neighbouring Pantellerii, Katanii or Palermo.
The ancient port city on the western shore of Sicily. Through centuries it held a position of one of the most important trading cities of the Mediterranean Sea. The most interesting part of the city starts behind Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and goes towards direction of an end of peninsula, where there is a harbour district and the Old Town.
In the harbour district make sure to visit a fish market, where local fishermen sell their morning catch. If you ask, they will explain you how to prepare a given species and how to serve it. There is also a huge offer of seafood. On some stalls you can buy fish fried on spot -just grab them and eat.
Step by a port vinery by Via Ammiraglio Staiti. You can taste there the best local wines, tuna snacks, hams from donkey’s meat or even from black pork, cheese, salads and other regional products.
The most important party in the city is a celebration of the Holy Week. The culmination is on Good Friday, when 20 platforms with effigies of saints from the 17th century, decorated with flowers and gold, silver adornments, leave church. The procession drags behind the porters that carry platforms through the whole old town. The march lasts whole day and night, the effigies go back to church only on Saturday morning.
When you get hungry, Trapani has also a lot to offer. Let’s begin with starters – in Capricci in Tavola by Corso Italia you will try the best snacks made out of local products. In this eatery there is also a shop with huge choice of local wines. For bigger hunger, we recommend Trattoria La Golosa at Via Salemi. You can get there delicious seafood, pasta prepared in every way possible and local specialty – tartare from tuna. If you get hungry while on a night walk in the port district, go to Maree at via Serisso for the best takeaway food – baked sardines or octopuses from a paper bag taste the best when eaten while staring at the sea.
