If you visit Weeze with a kid, make sure to step by park located on the verge of the city, just by the ruins of the castle Hertefeld. You will find there a zoo and an educational pathway.
Just by an airport there is located the museum Laarbruch, that hides history of military aviation. Nothing strange in that – today’s airport in Weeze used to belong to the British forces RAF.
Spend one day closer to the nature. In Kevin’s Pub at Wasserstr. 50 ask for rafting down the river Niers. At your disposal are canoes and a few-person dinghy. The river flows through forests and fields.
Full of charm, small city in the west of Germany, just by border with the Netherlands. The oldest found traits of humanity on this area are coming from the stone age.
Weeze can boasts as many as three castles. The castle Wissen with fosse is located south of the city. Construction started in the 14th century. Then it was many times renovated, to finally remain in the neogothic style. Its most interesting element is the chapel from 1876. On the other side of Weeze there is the castle in Kalbeck. First notes were mentioning it already in 1326. It was engulfed by fire for multiple times. Finally it was rebuilt in 1909 inspired by Westphalia castles from the 18th century. In summertime, there are gig taking place in the castle’s gardens. Whereas, to the west from the city there are ruins of Baroque castle Hertefeld. They serve as stage for theatre plays.
Rest as inhabitants of the region do – actively and getting to know the neighbourhood. In Weeze there are a few rental spots of bikes. It is worth to get tempted by this mean of transportation, because in this area there are plenty of interesting bike paths. We especially recommend the Herrensitz path, thanks to which one can visit the house of Anna from Kleve, the castle Myland or picturesque Gennep on the Netherlands side, where rivers Meuse and Niers come together.
Go to Weeze in December and you won’t be able to forget this city. Before Christmas, in the whole city preparations can be seen. On every step you can stumble upon stalls with Christmas decorations and souvenirs, and on the main square you can drink hot wine and walk around accompanied by Christmas melodies.
German cuisine is a real feast, especially by amateurs of beer. Dishes, which you have to taste in Weeze, are very well composing with golden, local drinks. For tasty dinner go to Kupferpfanne at Wasserstr. 28. Order there Kupferpfanne, pork in mushroom sauce and croquets or Schweinelendchen „Weezer Art“ – roasted piglet with cheese. Those fancying new taste, we recommend weinbergschnecken, roasted snails in garlic cause.
